I am looking for talented PhD students who are willing to contribute to cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in medical imaging. This is a funded 3.5-year PhD studentship in the School of Computer Science, the University of Birmingham. The anticipated start date for this position is preferred to be in Spring 2024 or Autumn 2024.
Project description
This PhD project is situated at the convergence of AI/ML and biomedical image analysis. The successful candidate will actively engage in cross-disciplinary collaborations with a broad network of experts. The primary objective of the project is to explore innovative AI/ML techniques to tackle significant challenges in cardiac imaging. These challenges encompass, but are not limited to, 2D-to-3D shape reconstruction, motion modeling, cross-modality cardiac image analysis, and AI-driven diagnosis. The overarching aim of this research is to enhance the efficiency of cardiac image analysis, deepen our understanding of cardiovascular diseases, and provide invaluable support to healthcare professionals in their daily clinical tasks.
Eligibility
- A Distinction Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field.
- Strong programming experience in Python, and experience of using PyTorch and/or TensorFlow libraries.
- Self-motivated and enthusiastic for doing research.
- Interested in AI, ML, computer vision, biomedical image analysis, and healthcare.
- Research experience on AI in healthcare is highly desirable.
- Outstanding communication skills.
- Outstanding and proficiency in spoken and written English.

Funding information
Currently, successful candidates are expected to be eligible for tuition fees (Home Student level) and stipend. International students are welcomed to apply and may need to cover the difference between home and international tuition fee. However, there are various scholarships from the university.
